What strategies do you use to cope with negative feelings?

I think positive and negative feelings or thinking are part of our life. It can change whole life if we can ignore it.

I am always simply accept that it is part of  our human nature or life. They are normal. Denying them is what causes they become problem. When we deny something we can’t deal with it.

There are times when we are going to feel anger, hate, sorrow, despair, jealousy etc. There are situations where not feeling those things would be weird. If someone hurts we it’s okay to be angry or sad. If we weren’t angry or sad I’d be concerned.

Mostly problem comes when we allow ours negative feelings to translate into negative deeds. If we are so angry and full of hate that we are killing people then that is a problem.

When I feel something negative I give myself permission to feel it. And then I ride it out.

I am by nature a self-controlled person who thinks a lot about things so I never worry overmuch that my negative feelings are going to lead to negative deeds. I think too much to allow emotions to have one hundred percent sway over me.

Coping with negative feelings is essential for maintaining mental well-being. Here are some strategies commonly used to cope with negative emotions:

  • Acknowledge and Accept: Recognize and accept your feelings without judgment. Acknowledging negative emotions is the first step towards dealing with them effectively.
  • Mindfulness and Meditation: Practice mindfulness techniques and meditation to stay present and observe your thoughts and emotions without getting carried away by them. Mindfulness can help you develop a non-reactive attitude towards negative feelings.
  • Deep Breathing and Relaxation Techniques: Engage in deep breathing exercises or progressive muscle relaxation to calm your mind and body. These techniques can reduce stress and help manage negative emotions.
  • Physical Activity: Regular exercise releases endorphins, which are natural mood lifters. Engaging in physical activity such as walking, jogging, yoga, or dancing can help alleviate negative feelings and improve overall well-being.
  • Healthy Lifestyle Choices: Maintain a balanced diet, get enough sleep, and avoid excessive alcohol or substance use. A healthy lifestyle can support emotional resilience and coping mechanisms.
  • Seek Social Support: Share your feelings with trusted friends, family members, or a therapist. Talking about your emotions can provide perspective, validation, and support.
  • Engage in Hobbies and Activities: Participate in activities that you enjoy and that bring you a sense of fulfillment. Engaging in hobbies can distract you from negative thoughts and promote feelings of happiness and accomplishment.
  • Cognitive Restructuring: Challenge negative thought patterns and replace them with more balanced and positive perspectives. This cognitive restructuring technique can help you reframe situations and reduce the intensity of negative emotions.
  • Self-Compassion: Treat yourself with kindness and understanding, especially during difficult times. Practice self-compassion by offering yourself the same empathy and support that you would offer to a friend in similar circumstances.
  • Seek Professional Help: If negative feelings persist or significantly impact your daily life, consider seeking support from a mental health professional. Therapy can provide you with coping strategies tailored to your individual needs and help you work through underlying issues contributing to negative emotions.

Remember that coping strategies may vary depending on individual preferences and circumstances. It’s important to experiment with different techniques and find what works best for you.
